Chute Gerdeman

Who We Are:
Chute Gerdeman is a retail experience design firm specializing in environments that need to work as hard as they look; whether that's a single breakthrough prototype or a system that scales to 500 locations. Our work spans formats from flagship destinations to repeatable prototypes to full-scale rollout systems.

What We Do:
We design retail environments that solve for two things simultaneously: brand expression and operational reality.

For Prototype & Flagship Projects:
If you're developing a new store concept, repositioning your brand, or creating a destination experience, we deliver exceptional design that differentiates you in market. Our prototypes aren't just beautiful, they're built to inform what comes next, whether that's one location or one hundred.

For Multi-Unit Rollout:
If you're scaling a concept across multiple markets, we design systems that protect creative intent through the forces that normally erode it: budget pressures, permitting requirements, site variations, and localization demands. We translate vision into buildable specifications that your teams can execute without the designer in the room.
Many brands need both. A prototype that establishes the creative vision, then a translation system that ensures location 50 still delivers the brand promise.

Our Approach:
We don't separate "creative" from "execution." We design with the full lifecycle in mind: from concept approval through procurement, permitting, construction, and operation.
Our deliverables include the creative vision and the infrastructure to protect it: modular systems, cost-optimization strategies, specification standards, and decision frameworks that help internal teams navigate trade-offs without compromising brand distinction.
We've learned that the gap between approval and opening is where most retail design fails. Beautiful renderings that can't be permitted. Signature elements that get value-engineered out. Concepts that work in one market but break in another. We design to survive that gap.

Recent Work Includes:
-Multi-format retail concepts for national grocery chains
-Next-generation store prototypes for omnichannel brands
-Flagship repositioning for heritage retailers
-Rollout systems for fast-casual restaurant groups
-Experience design for mixed-use developments

What Makes Us Different:
Most firms are either exceptional at creative vision or exceptional at execution, rarely both. Large architecture firms default to safe. Boutique creative agencies design for the approval meeting, not the rollout.

We sit between those extremes: delivering creative work that holds up under operational scrutiny, and scalable systems that don't sacrifice distinction for efficiency.

We're equally comfortable designing a one-off flagship that pushes boundaries and a 200-location rollout system that preserves those boundaries at scale.

Who We Work With:
Multi-unit retail brands, restaurant groups, grocery and convenience chains, and consumer brands expanding into physical retail. Clients range from emerging concepts opening their first 10 locations to established retailers reimagining hundreds.
We work best with brands that view physical experience as strategic infrastructure, not just real estate. With executives who are accountable for both creative vision and operational delivery.

What a Conversation Looks Like:
We'll ask about what you're working on: new prototype, format evolution, rollout optimization, or something else. We'll share relevant work and talk through how we'd approach your specific challenge; whether that's creating something never seen before or ensuring something exceptional doesn't degrade at scale.

If there's a fit, we'll propose a deeper working session with your team.

We design experiences that work in the real world, not just the rendering.
